Haverhill Community Television (HCTV) recognized and awarded the outstanding talents and skills of several of its community volunteers at their annual members’ meeting held recently at the HCTV television studio. The awards included Volunteer of the Year, Producer of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and a Lifetime Achievement Award. Tiffany Middleton, Promotions Manager at WHDH-TV 7 and a former HCTV volunteer, was the keynote speaker. The meeting also marked HCTV’s 25thyear anniversary as a non-profit organization serving the residence of Haverhill.

“The members’ meeting provided us with the perfect opportunity to highlight our outstanding accomplishments over the years and to recognize some of the volunteers who have helped us achieve many of our goals,” said Darlene Beal, Executive Director. “We have come a long way since first opening our doors back in 1988. Today we are a high tech, cutting edge access station. We provide on-location video streaming, on-demand services, we continue to invest in new media capabilities, and we are very fortunate to have over 600 volunteers from the city of Haverhill.” Throughout its 25 years, HCTV has worked closely with other non-profit organizations helping to spread their message and broaden their community reach; these partnerships include Northern Essex Community College, Haverhill High School, the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce, the Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce, Emmaus House, and the Haverhill YMCA.

“We would not be the organization we are today if we did not have such a substantial and dedicated volunteer base,” said Matt Belfiore, Operations Manager. “We depend on our volunteers to produce most of the programming seen on HCTV. Many of our volunteers are here every day producing a program, editing footage, manning cameras, or assisting in the control room. They are really the backbone of this station, and we are happy to recognize those who go above and beyond for HCTV and the community.”

The Lifetime Achievement Award, an award only given 3 other times in the 25-year history of the station, was presented to volunteer Jay LaFond. “Many people in the community know Jay. He covers many of the events in the city, and we often forget that he is a volunteer. He works as if he is a member of the paid staff. He absolutely deserves this recognition,” said Belfiore.

The Volunteer of the Year Awards went to Colin Kennedy, Paula Jalbert, Eric Smith, and Brennan Smith; the Producer of the Year went to Lindsay Paris for Merrimack Valley Gourmet and Merrimack Valley Kids; Rookie of the Year went to Kathy Kay. All of the award recipients live in Haverhill.

Contact
Ruth Crocker
telephone: 978 372 0591
email: rucrocke@bsamail.org

DARLENE BEAL AND DUNCAN C “DEKE” FARMER TO RECEIVE YANKEE CLIPPER COUNCIL, BSA 2013
DISTINGUISHED CITIZENS AWARD

Prominent local citizens Darlene Beal and Duncan C “Deke” Farmer will be recognized for their outstanding contributions to the community on May 15, when they receive the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Yankee Clipper Council of the Boy Scouts of America. This award is bestowed upon individuals who have been unselfish in their service to others and have demonstrated integrity and genuine concern for others in their professional and personal lives, making important contributions serving their fellow citizens, community, and nation.

Darlene Beal is Executive Director of Haverhill Community Television, a position she has held for almost 20 years. She is active in community affairs, and has received the Liberty Bell Award from the Haverhill Bar Association, and is a Paul Harris Fellow. She serves on the Board of Directors of Career Resource Corporation and the Department of Children and Families Area Board; and is past Board Member of the Salvation Army and the YWCA. As an active member of Rotary since 1995, Darlene has given back to the Haverhill community, as well as undertaking ambitious projects overseas. Since 2001, she has volunteered as a photojournalist with Rotaplast, a partnership of Rotary clubs which provide housing, food, transportation and support for plastic surgeons, in missions to India, Peru, Bolivia, Guatemala and Chile.

Deke Farmer joined his father in 1964 at H. L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Homes, a family business since 1878. His impressive community service began with his involvement with the Children’s Aid and Family Society, where he was helpful in bringing the “Widow to Widow” program to Haverhill. He was a volunteer with the Merrimack Valley United Fund, a former committee member of the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce, and also was involved with the Haverhill Beautification Program, Adopt a Park. He is a former board member of the American Red Cross, Haverhill Chapter; Career Resources; and the Salvation Army. He is a longtime member of the Board of Directors of Haverhill Bank, and the Griffin White Foundation. For over 25 years he has served on the Board of Bethany Homes, and for over 30 years has been a member and past president of the Haverhill Kiwanis Club. In all his philanthropic work, Deke is proudest of the H. L. Farmer & Sons Bethany Bereavement and Resource Center, which he was instrumental in establishing in 1990. This nonprofit organization assists the many people in the community who are having difficulty dealing with the loss of a loved one.

The event will take place on May 15th from 6:00-9:00 pm at DiBurro’s. All proceeds will be used to support scouting and youth development activities in greater Haverhill. The Yankee Clipper Council serves 51 towns and cities in northeastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire with over 8000 youth from these communities involved in scouting programs and summer camping each year. To order tickets, please call Ruth Crocker at 978 372 0591 or email rucrocke@bsamail.org. Registration is also available online

The ten-minute video titled “Weapon Violence” was created and produced in collaboration with the Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) program at Haverhill High School.

“I was very fortunate to work closely with the VIP team to produce an impactful public service announcement that focuses on the devastating consequences of choosing violence over other conflict resolutions,” said Bowden. “VIP came up with the concept, and I produced and directed the piece according to their goals and vision.”

The VIP team is made up of a diverse group of students in grades 9 – 12 who are committed to preventing violence and promoting peace and respect within their school and community. Lori Curry, co-advisor with Carol Ireland, has turned to HCTV for six years for guidance and support to create meaningful anti-violence videos. “This year we chose weapon violence as our focus because we were witnessing an increasing amount of coverage around tragic school events both locally and nationally,” said Curry. “According to the 2010 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 18% of students will carry a gun to school within a 30 day period. It is our goal to get students to think about their decisions and to understand that violence is never the right choice.”

The ACM-NE rated all video submission on the following criteria: content, creativity, technical elements, and the viewer’s overall reaction. “We didn’t sugar coat what violence can do and how ugly it can be,” said Bowden. “As the director, I felt it was important to make this video realistic and to send a visually memorable message. I believe we accomplished that goal.”

The video was created during the summer with students enrolled in the VIP’s “Safe Summer for Youth” program. “The entire video took approximately 3 weeks,” said Bowden. “It was very rewarding working on this project because the students in this program are really working hard to make a difference. Some have even expressed an interest in video production, and that is especially exciting with the tremendous opportunities offered to them here at HCTV. They can learn the craft in a supportive, encouraging, and creative environment.”

Bowden was first exposed to HCTV as a student in the video production class offered by Northern Essex Community College and held in the station’s training room. “Chris started out with us as a volunteer and then we hired him as a production assistant,” said Darlene Beal, Executive Director. “He quickly worked his way up to program director and is now a full-time employee.”

According to Bowden, it is because of HCTV that he has been so successful. “I really don’t know where I would be if it were not for HCTV and the doors that volunteering and working here have opened for me.”

Bowden grew up in Ipswich, MA and currently lives in Seabrook, NH.

HCTV is proud to be a growing facility. The staff and volunteers are getting involved with some really great projects. One of the most exciting is the launch of the new internet radio and podcast program.

Currently, HCTV hosts three internet radio stations that can be streamed for free right on your computer. You can even listen from your smart phone. Links to each internet radio station can be found on our homepage, www.haverhillcommunitytv.org, or by going to www.shoutcast.com and searching for HCTV in the search bar.

All of our government, educational and public access programming is available for immediate audio stream. The content will be updated weekly and new shows will be added frequently. A streaming schedule is also in development so that we can deliver a more specific time frame for each show to be streamed. Keep listening. Your show could come up next.

We are also on the verge of launching a podcast program. A podcast is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio and/or video files subscribed to and downloaded through the web or streamed online to a computer or mobile device. The word is derived from “broadcast” and “pod” from the success of the iPod, as podcasts are often listened to on portable media players.

Program Director Chris Bowden is in charge of gathering content and overseeing the project as a whole. Chris has already reached out to several of HCTV’s volunteers to start developing shows for podcasts. If you have a podcast show idea, please contact Chris and book time to discuss your idea. Once the program has been launched in full, all podcasts and shows will be available for free download from the Apple iTunes store. Each podcast will have its own page on the iTunes store and will have a list of all its shows.

This is a great way to get your show out into the world and spread it around. Over 6.4 million people own an iPhone in the U.S. alone. Surely a few of those users would be interested in downloading your free podcast to their device. Podcasting is easy, creative and a lot of fun. Feel free to get involved, no matter what your level of expertise.

HCTV works hard to be a resource for the surrounding community. One of the ways we do that is by offering training classes in television production and editing.

Recently, HCTV opened its doors to the Team Coordinating Agency, whose mission is “empowering the community through prevention, education and treatment.” TCA began in 1966 as a grassroots community effort to address a growing drug and alcohol abuse problem in Haverhill. During the 1970s, changing needs in the community led the agency to expand its services beyond the treatment of substance abuse.

Today, TCA is a multi-service behavioral health organization providing a wide range of substance abuse, child protective, and mental health services in outpatient, residential and forensic settings.

Kim Boiselle, TCA program director, got in touch with HCTV about a special program idea she had that entailed working with some of the program’s teens in an effort to train them in television production and guide them through a constructive video project. We discussed the idea of the teens scripting, storyboarding and producing their own PSA on a topic of their choice.

I met with the teens and staff and we started hashing out ideas for a PSA. The teens decided that they wanted to demonstrate the dangerous and potential fatal effects that can result from prescription drug abuse.

The PSA, which is currently in pre-production, will show a teen at a party who is looking to access illegal prescription pills. After finding a source, he takes the pills and ends up overdosing. The teen is taken to the hospital and his condition is unknown. The message? Abusing prescription drugs is not worth your health or life.

We want this PSA to be a resource for a young person who may be struggling with prescription addiction, and also something that will create awareness for parents.

This is an ambitious project, but we hope to have the PSA completed by late March. TCA has already inquired about bringing in an adult class following the current one.

Taking A Look Back

In celebration of our 25th Anniversary, we are inviting you to take a look back with us at the last 25 years in Haverhill. We are encouraging all of our members to create a retrospective show. Maybe revisit your first episode? Maybe there’s an early program from HCTV’s past that got you thinking about the station and so you became a member; this is the perfect chance to share that experience.

Over the next year, we want to revisit those early years through different videos, and we hope you’ll participate. In the coming years, we are looking to grow stronger, and the best place to start growing is the roots.

We are encouraging a community-wide participation to help make this year special – maybe a special retrospective episode, looking back at your favorite clips; or maybe a new introduction for a special, favorite episode of yours. The possibilities are endless. Our knowledgeable staff is always available to make appointments for anyone who wants some help along the way.

The question is, just how would you like to remember the last 25 years? We’d like to offer some suggestions to help guide you along:

One option is a compilation episode – a collection of your show’s “greatest hits.” Think back to all the guests that have appeared on your show, and all of the questions you’ve asked them. Maybe you’d like to compile a list of your favorite responses over the year and make a video highlighting all of those moments (Don’t forget! These are the perfect opportunities to ask our staff to set up an appointment for help!). With a selection of great clips, you can even film a narration to string them all together, highlighting why each discussion was important and why you wanted to remember it.

There are other ways to take a look back, too! Maybe there’s a special episode that holds a place in your memory, a special guest that was perfect for your show. You can take that episode and display its importance on its own, and our staff can book studio time with you to film an introduction or outro for you to explain why that episode (or episodes, feel free to keep this trend going for the year) was chosen.

Another option available is to have a show discussion about the past 25 years. Perhaps a special guest, maybe your first, comes back to look back on what’s changed. Or you could even have another volunteer come on your show to talk about shared experiences at HCTV over the years. The possibilities are practically limitless!

Don’t forget, these are just a few ideas – feel free to celebrate this anniversary in any way you’d like.

We hope that everyone joins us for this special event; this is a great chance to showcase the evolution of our great community

Our staff is always available during business hours to help you plan and execute any show you’d like to try. So let’s see where we’ve come from, and how far we’ve gone. Lets say one last goodbye to the past, and turn our heads to the next 25 years at Haverhill Community Television.
